Description

with Brandon Hall,
University of NC-Charlotte Pitching Coach

The UNCC pitching staff was named the #1 staff in all of college baseball in 2007. Their cutting-edge expertise is packed into this DVD on the art of pitching. Coach Hall, on the mound, demonstrates the baseball pitching mechanics and technique of using the rubber, taking signs, rocker step, rocker to balance 3-point movement, balance to power and power to delivery. Pitching out of the stretch is a skill taught in detail. Hall believes in three goals in the set-up; create a downhill plane, maximize velocity and put pitchers in the position to allow them to do the same thing every day. To relieve pressure on the arm, Hall instructs through dry drills. This keeps pitchers sharp without throwing every day. With the ball, a good drill is the hand extension and spin drill. Kneeling drills put pitchers on a knee to emphasize power and finish. Other drills include the square drill, stretch stride and stretch stride to balance. The 60-foot and 90-foot toss drill focuses on footwork and throwing. This drill works out to the player's maximum distance. Crow hop, arm action, and grips complete the drill catalog. Brandon Hall has made one of the best pitching instructional videos and baseball coaching videos available in the Art of Pitching.

59 minutes. 2008.

Features
  • ABOUT THE COACH...Brandon Hall is in his sixth season with the 49ers coaching staff, and is in his third season as the team's recruiting coordinator. His main on-field responsibilities are handling the pitching staff.

  • In his nine seasons as an assistant, Hall's teams have won four regular-season championships and six of his pitching staffs have been ranked nationally in ERA, including the top spot in the nation in 2007 (2.64). A philosophy that is built on development and efficiency has consistently prepared pitching staffs to perform at extremely high levels.

  • In 2007, Charlotte held the number one ERA in Division I baseball and was second in winning percentage. The team moved up four spots from their 2006 ranking to 52nd in strikeouts per nine innings. Two pitchers (Mills & Steedley) were ranked in the top 100 in strikeouts. He has coached seven all-conference pitchers, three all-Freshman pitchers, two pitchers of the year, two freshman All-Americans and one consensus All-American, Adam Mills. Mills was the ace of the 2007 staff. He led the country in wins (14) and ERA (1.01). For his accomplishments, Mills was also a Finalist for the Roger Clemens' Award, A-10 Pitcher of the Year, Semi-Finalist for the Dick Howser Award and Semi-Finalist for the Golden Spikes Award. Each year under Hall has brought improvement. Eight of Hall's Nine staffs have improved their ERA and Runs per Game over the previous year, while 19 pitchers have gone on to sign professional contracts.

  • In the past five years with Charlotte, Hall has seen seven Niners move to the professional level. Of the seven, none were drafted prior to their stint with the 49ers. A reoccurring theme within these pitchers is their success at the next level. Erik Walker ('06) was named Baseball America's Short Season-A Relief Pitcher of the Year in 2006. Adam Mills was named to the Boston Red Sox "Futures Game" and pitched in Fenway Park during the 2007 season. All three seniors from the 2007 staff were given the chance to move into professional baseball (Mills - Boston, Steedley - Minnesota, Foard - New York Yankees).

  • Over the past five seasons, Hall has also worked with the Niner catchers. In 2007, four-year starter Kris Rochelle was named All A-10 and ranked as one of the top five catchers in the country by Rivals.com. Kris was drafted by Detroit in the 22nd round, improving on his selection out of high school.

  • Before joining the coaching staff at Charlotte, he spent four seasons as an assistant coach at his alma mater, UNC Wilmington, where he also worked with the pitchers.

  • In four years at UNCW, the pitching staff finished each season ranked among the top 30 nationally in team ERA. In 2001, UNCW finished fourth in team ERA with a 3.20 mark, and in 2002, the Seahawks' pitching staff finished 25th in the country with a 3.95 ERA.

  • Hall also spent two summers on the coaching staff of the Wilson Tobs in the Coastal Plain League. In 2001, he served as the Tobs' manager and guided the team to a berth in the CPL Finals, coaching in the league's all-star game that summer.

  • The Raleigh, N.C., native was a two-year letterwinner as a pitcher at UNCW. He won seven games and had a 3.87 ERA in two seasons on the mound.

  • Hall was twice elected president of the student-athlete advisory committee at UNCW, where he graduated in 1999 with a bachelor's degree in business marketing. Hall lives in Concord, N.C.
