Hitting a Baseball - The
Love of Hitting
How
to Master the Art of Baseball Hitting – Baseball Batting Made Easy Through
Baseball Hitting Fundamentals , Baseball Hitting Aids and Baseball Batting
Instruction
Like most men my age, I learned how to hit a baseball
from my father. Baseball hitting
was learned without any baseball hitting aids. There were no individual hitting skill
books and no baseball hitting instructional videos to watch again and
again. While my father was
terrific with the repetition - throwing the ball again and again while I
repeatedly hit it, he lacked the ability to teach me any more than he had
learned from his father. What he
lacked in coaching ability he more than made up for in the most important area
of all – developing the love for hitting a baseball.
As I moved
from little league baseball into high school baseball I came in contact with
coaches who were true students of the game. They used all the latest training
aids, they videotaped every swing in practice sessions and then took the time
to break down my swing to show me what I was doing well and what needed the
most work. Much of the time they
would improvise and develop a hitting drill to help me overcome flaws in my
swing. Some of the concepts they
taught are still popular today.
They also challenged all that I had learned and introduced me to new
baseball hitting techniques that proved to help me to enjoy the game even to
this day. The batting techniques
discussed on the following pages will help to improve the skills of any
player. The skills are intended
to be reinforced by the use of the hitting training aids and hitting
instructional videos at the end of this section.
As a
lifetime student of hitting I’ve always believed that the players of today can
never know too much about the art of hitting a baseball. Only through constant education can
players truly develop a swing into all that it can be. We all know the players
with the sweet swing. The "sweet swing" player has a hitting swing that is often
hard to describe but when you see it, it is beautiful. I want to take the time to help all
players have that type of swing.
The type of swing that not only helps players to look good while they
are hitting the baseball, but also to be the most efficient in delivering
their total power into each swing, resulting in great hits and hitting
success. The more time that a
player spends working to develop the proper mechanics the better the player
will be in pressure filled game situations. This is true in all sports but none so
much as in baseball. No team
sport puts as much pressure on any individual as does baseball. When all is said and done, it is just
the batter and the pitcher starting every play. Nothing can be more distressing to a
young player than to lack the proper fundamentals to be successful in that
situation. Following these
principles can develop their baseball hitting skills to a successful level and
to the point where they love the game for the rest of their life – that is
what my father wanted for me out of the game. We have also included several drills
to help develop the fundamentals of hitting a baseball and to provide the
necessary skills to train the young players on what to do when they do not
have the benefit of a coach standing at their side.
The
baseball hitting concepts on the following pages are intended for players of
all levels from the little leagues to major leaguers. The goal is for you to be able to
develop a swing that suits your capabilities and allows you to manage to hit
with authority in all areas of the strike zone. I invite you to read the following
pages with the thought towards forgetting what you have learned about hitting
in the past. With that
thought you can study the following pages and become the best hitter you
can be.
